Time to Shine Bright: Illinois Net Metering Policy Changes - Go Solar in 2024!
At The Solar Soldier, we're passionate about empowering homeowners to embrace clean energy and unlock the power of the sun. A significant factor in making solar an attractive option is net metering. But here in Illinois, the net metering landscape is changing!
What is Net Metering?
Net metering is a billing system that allows homeowners with solar panels to receive credits for the excess electricity their system generates. When your solar panels produce more power than your home uses, that excess energy flows back to the grid. Net metering ensures you receive a credit on your utility bill for this "returned" electricity. These credits can then be used to offset the cost of the electricity you use from the grid during times when your solar panels aren't producing enough power, like at night.
Benefits of Net Metering for Homeowners:
Reduced Electricity Bills: Net metering credits significantly lower your overall electricity costs.
Faster Return on Investment: Because you're generating your own power and receiving credits, your solar system pays for itself sooner.
Increased Home Value: Studies show homes with solar panels tend to sell faster and for a higher price.
Net Metering Policy Changes in Illinois:
Important Update: The current net metering policy in Illinois, which provides homeowners with a credit at the retail rate for excess solar energy they send back to the grid, is set to change on January 1, 2025. You MUST have your system turned on by December 31, 2024 to be grandfathered into the current full net metering policy.
The new policy will not offer the full 1-for-1 credit for excess solar energy, homeowners will no longer receive credit for the delivery expenses on their utility bills. This means the financial benefits of going solar will be less without a battery after 2025.
